Welcoming The Spring Season

Despite the forecast, live like its spring. – Lily Pulitzer

Trees, plants and fields are finally starting to turn green again.  A transitional season, spring is a time of renewal and the beginning of a new cycle of life.  There is no question why I welcome the spring season.  It makes me feel hopeful, revived and I look forward to a new recharging in all aspects of my life.

The air seems fresher, my steps seem lighter and spring fever fills my soul.  Life just seems a bit prettier in the spring.  No more excuses for putting off that morning jog/walk because the roads are covered with ice or snow.  No more lounging on the couch all day, the weather is just too nice to waste on that.

The leaves we saw fall and the wilting flowers of winter are now budding with vibrant colors of green, red, yellow, pinks and purples.  Spring is a positive season self-awareness and positive outcomes.  It is the perfect time to start a new home project, begin a new book, finally enforce that New Year’s resolution of going to the gym, or trying a new recipe.

Spring helps us realize and reflect on past lessons learned, and encourages us to embrace and adapt to the start of new changes over time.  For this reason it will remain my favorite season.

Happy first day of spring 2017!

What new changes do you plan on making for the spring season?

MY 10 BEST TIPS FOR SURVIVING BLACK FRIDAY

  • BEAT THE EARLY BIRDS:
    • Many stores offer Black Friday deals as early as Wednesday. Shopping early allows you to get a better selection and avoid the crowds.
  • BE SAVY, DO YOUR HOMEWORK & COMPARISON SHOP:
    • It helps to check the prices before you by your items to avoid getting caught up in all the frenzy of Black Friday. Websites such as Google Shopping, Pricegrabber, and Shopping.com allow you to see the cheapest prices online right now and compare them. You can also see if the same deal is offered online thus saving you trip to the store. Phone apps like Flipp.com allow you to browse local weekly ads by searching for savings by item, brand, or retail store.
  • PRICE MATCH:
    • Retailers such as Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Toys R Us and Home Depot will price match competitor’s prices on specific products. Some may even offer online-only promotions and may be willing to offer the same price in-store if you ask nicely.
  • MAKE A BUDGET AND STICK TO IT:
    • Making a budget ahead of time can prevent you from over spending. You can also leave your credit card at home and shop exclusively with cash.
  • ASK FOR GIFT RECEIPTS:
    • When shopping for other people a gift receipt can make it easier for them to return the item.
  • CHECK STORE RETURN/EXCHANGE POLICIES IN ADVANCE:
    • This can be important especially when shopping online. Some retailers may have restocking fees, shorter return deadlines and other terms and conditions. It is best to be prepared because this may change where you decide to shop.
  • BE LOYAL:
    • Many retailers have loyalty programs that provide sales and promotions to their members and not the public. Sign up for Black Friday shopping alerts for coupons, promotions and discounts.
  • GET SOCIAL:
    • Facebook pages and Twitter feeds are great resources to find deals and promotions. Retailers offer rewards to customers who “like” or “follow” them with special alerts to Black Friday incentives and discounts. Sharing is caring so share those deals with friends and family.
  • DRESS COMFORTABLY:
    • You may need to cover some serious ground or stand in long lines so comfort is KEY.
  • BE PATIENT, HAVE FUN AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

How To Create An Attitude of Gratitude All Month Long

gratitude-journalThanksgiving is the simple act of continually giving thanks.  Showing gratitude helps to see things in a new light through appreciation.

Gratitude is the best attitude. – Author Unknown

Beginning today I will be creating a gratitude journal.  I will be challenging myself for the entire month of November to write a daily journal entry  on the things I am grateful for.  Creating a gratitude journal can foster a habit that can help embrace better relationships, better health, mental clarity and tangible and intangible wealth.  It is  great way to keep yourself in a thankful and positive state of mind.  Keeping a journal is helpful on those days when your feeling down .  Reading your entries can shift your negative energy back to a positive one by putting the focus back to the things you have to be grateful for.  The stresses of family, work, and daily routines can trap us in a pattern of negativity and can result in more stress and unhappiness.

Here are a 5 tips that can help you get the most of a gratitude journal:

  • Set a daily time for journal writing.  Writing in the beginning of the day can help start your day on a positive note.  While writing at the end of the day can assist you in collecting your thoughts and ease your mind as the day comes to an end.  It is totally up to you.
  • Pick a few things you are grateful for each day and try not to repeat the same things.  The point is to challenge yourself to find new things to be grateful for.
  • It is important to write with love and joy.  Such feelings can create more of an awareness of things to be grateful for that you may not have noticed before.
  • Try and elaborate in detail the things you are grateful for.  Explain how it makes you feel and why you are grateful for it.
  • Turn negative into positive.  Instead of dwelling on the things that are wrong or not working out, try to find a positive in those situations.

There is no right or wrong way to creating a journal.  Keeping a gratitude journal is one of the best ways to retrain your thoughts to focus on the positive things in your life.

So join me in the month of November and create your own gratitude journal.  Grab a journal, notebook or mobile phone and challenge yourself to write something new daily that you are grateful for.

The Best Me in 2016…

As the New Year is begins we focus on new goals and resolutions.

According to the dictionary a resolution “is a firm decision to do or not to do something”. Like many over the years I have made several resolutions (weight loss, financial, etc.) and sadly stuck to none. I can only blame myself for not being realistic, not being motivated, and just giving up.

This past year was an eye opening experience for me.

I realized that I totally let myself go (physically, mentally, and spiritually). I’ve lost my identity, my worth and my love for myself. One of the biggest struggles in life is the struggle to know, embrace, and accept ourselves with all of our imperfections and faults.

Above all, be true to yourself, and if you cannot put your heart in it, take yourself out of it. – Author Unknown

Now don’t get me wrong, I am a mother of four and have no intentions on “jumping ship”, I just need to think of me more often than none. I stopped caring and traded my well-being for the well-being of others.

I am making a firm decision for 2016 and beyond to choose me!

I choose to become more mindful of my thoughts, feelings, and behavior. To become familiar with my vulnerabilities as well as my strengths and milestones, and most importantly to love myself for both.

I have committed to finding my happy place by creating a personal affirmation:

Wisdom Wednesday…

Starting today I will be posting some encouraging and inspiring words of wisdom each and every Wednesday for the entire month of September.  For this first post in the series “Wisdom Wednesday” I chose a quote from legendary Hollywood actress Katharine Hepburn.  Known for being outspoken, assertive, and athletic Katherine epitomized the “modern woman” of 20th century America. She was also a fashion icon wearing trousers before it was fashionable for women to do so.
